For most of the year, a Dubai garden or terrace is something you look at through the window. Then, sometime in late October or early November, the evenings cool down and suddenly everyone wants to eat outside, sit by the pool or host friends on the terrace. The problem is that five months of sun, sand and sprinklers have not been kind to anything outdoors.
Here is how to get your outdoor space ready, in the order that makes the most sense.
Start with a Walk Round
Before you buy new cushions or lights, walk around the garden or terrace with a notebook. Look for:
- Timber that has greyed, split or lifted
- Rust on gate hinges, railings and furniture fixings
- Outdoor lights that no longer work
- Loose tiles or paving around the pool
- Stains and dust on walls and paths
- Shade sails or pergola covers that have torn or faded
Most of these are quick fixes on their own. Together they decide whether the space feels inviting or neglected.
Clean Before You Fix
Dust and sand hide damage. Pressure washing paths, walls and paving first shows you what really needs repair, and it instantly makes the space look cared for. It is also the right first step before staining or painting anything. See pressure washing.
Be careful with high pressure on soft timber and old grout. A wide nozzle and a little distance avoids lifting fibres or blasting grout out of joints.
Bring Timber Back to Life
Decks, pergolas and wooden screens take the worst of the summer. UV light breaks down the surface, and sprinkler water gets into every crack. If the wood has turned silver or feels rough, it needs a light sand and a fresh coat of stain or oil.
- Replace split or soft boards first. Sealing over rot only hides it.
- Sand to clean timber, then dust off thoroughly.
- Apply a UV-resistant exterior stain or oil, working along the grain.
- Leave it to cure fully before putting furniture back.
See deck repair and pergola and gazebo staining.
Fix Gates, Fences and Latches
A gate that will not latch is a safety problem if you have children or a pool. Heat makes hinges stiffen and posts move slightly, so latches stop lining up. Adjusting or replacing the hardware is usually a short job. See fence and gate repair.
Add Light, Carefully
Good lighting is what turns a garden into somewhere you use after sunset. A few ideas that work well in Dubai homes:
- Wall lights by the door and along the side of the house for safety
- Path lights so guests can find their way without torches
- Warm string lights over a pergola or seating area for atmosphere
- Uplights under a palm or feature tree
Outdoor fittings must be rated for outdoor use and wired safely, with the right protection on the circuit. Salt air near the coast also shortens the life of cheap fittings. See light fixture installation or smart lighting if you want to control them from your phone.
Check Shade and Furniture
- Re-tension shade sails and check the fixings into the wall or posts.
- Tighten bolts on outdoor tables and chairs, which loosen as they heat and cool.
- Anchor tall planters and outdoor heaters so winter winds cannot tip them.
Terraces and Balconies in Apartments
Apartment terraces need the same care on a smaller scale. Clear the floor drain, check that the balcony door slides and locks, and look at the silicone where the floor meets the wall. In towers, check your building rules before fixing anything to the walls or railings.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Does the Outdoor Season Start in Dubai?
For most families, it starts in late October or November, when evenings cool down, and runs until around April. November is the best time to prepare, before you want to use the space every evening.
How Often Should a Deck Be Sealed in Dubai?
Most decks need sanding and resealing at least once a year because of the strong sun. Decks near pools or under sprinklers may need it more often. If water stops beading on the surface, it is time.
Can You Install Outdoor Lights Without Digging up the Garden?
Often, yes. Wall lights and string lights can usually be fitted without digging. Path lights may need shallow cable runs or a suitable low-voltage system. We check the layout before quoting.
Do I Need Permission for Outdoor Changes in My Community?
Repairs and like-for-like replacements usually do not. New structures, such as a pergola, or changes to the outside of the villa may need community approval. Check with your community management first.
