When to Replace Rather Than Patch
Gypsum that has been wet for long goes soft and loses strength, and mould can grow inside it. Painting over it hides the problem for a short time only. Replacement is the safe repair.
Cutting back to studs gives the new panel solid fixing on every edge, so joints do not crack later.

How Do You Fix Large Holes in Drywall?
Large holes are cut back to a neat square, backed with timber or a metal patch, filled with a new piece of gypsum board, then taped, jointed, sanded and painted.
Can Water-Damaged Drywall Be Repaired or Must It Be Replaced?
Small, dry stains can be sealed and repainted. Gypsum that has gone soft, crumbly or mouldy must be cut out and replaced. In both cases the leak must be fixed first.
How Much Does Drywall Repair Cost in Dubai?
Small hole and crack repairs start from AED 150 per visit, including painting the repair. Water-damaged sections start from AED 300, and new partitions from about AED 85 per square metre.
