Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping? Causes and Fixes

A DB that trips every evening or after rain is telling you something. Here is how to read the signs and stay safe.

Few things are more frustrating than the power cutting out halfway through cooking dinner, or the AC switching off on a hot night. When a breaker keeps tripping, it is doing its job: protecting you and your wiring from a fault. The answer is not to keep resetting it, but to find out why.

MCB or RCD: What Is Tripping?

Your DB panel, or distribution board, contains two main kinds of protection:

  • MCBs (miniature circuit breakers) protect each circuit from overload and short circuits. One switch for lights, another for sockets, and so on.
  • RCDs (residual current devices) protect people from electric shock by detecting current leaking to earth. One RCD often covers several circuits.

Knowing which one trips is the first clue.

Common Causes of an MCB Tripping

Overloaded Circuits

Running several AC units, an oven and a kettle on one circuit can exceed its rating, especially in summer. If it trips when big appliances run together, the circuit is overloaded.

Short Circuits

If the MCB trips instantly when you reset it, there may be a short circuit: live and neutral touching somewhere. Leave it off and call an electrician. Our guide to short circuit repair explains how these are traced.

Common Causes of an RCD Tripping

Water Heaters

Ageing water heater elements often leak small amounts of current to earth, which trips the RCD, usually when the heater is on.

Water in Outdoor Fittings

Garden lights and outdoor sockets on villas often let in water from sprinklers or rain. If the RCD trips after watering or a storm, check outdoor circuits first.

Faulty Appliances

A washing machine, kettle or fridge with an internal fault can trip the RCD as soon as it starts.

What You Can Safely Do

  • Note when it trips: time of day, weather, what was running.
  • Unplug appliances on the affected circuit and reset once.
  • Plug appliances back one by one to see which causes the trip.
  • Do not reset repeatedly if it trips straight away.

When to Call an Electrician Straight Away

  • A burning smell, scorch marks or a hot socket
  • Sparks or buzzing from the DB panel
  • A breaker that will not reset at all
  • A tingle from a tap or appliance

For anything involving smoke or fire, leave the area and call Dubai Civil Defence on 997. If the whole building is dark, report it to DEWA on 991.

How an Electrician Finds the Fault

A professional tests the RCD trip time, measures insulation resistance on each circuit and checks for earth leakage, so the real cause is fixed rather than guessed. See DB tripping repair and DB panel repair for how we do it.

How to Read Your DB Panel

Most Dubai apartments have the DB panel in a cupboard near the entrance or kitchen, and villas often have a main board plus sub-boards.

  • Main switch: turns off power to the whole home.
  • RCDs: usually larger switches with a test button. Press the test button every few months; it should trip instantly.
  • MCBs: the row of smaller switches, one per circuit, such as lights, sockets, AC, kitchen or water heater.
  • DP switches: the red-light isolators on walls for water heaters and AC units are separate from the DB.

Good labelling saves time in an emergency. If your breakers are not labelled, an electrician can test and label each circuit during a DB check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Dangerous If My Breaker Keeps Tripping?

The trip itself is the breaker protecting you, but the cause can be dangerous. Repeated tripping can mean an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, damaged wiring or an earth leak. If it trips again immediately after resetting, leave it off and call an electrician.

Why Does My RCD Trip When It Rains?

Water is getting into an outdoor circuit, such as garden lights, outdoor sockets or a pump. The water creates a small leak to earth, which the RCD detects. An electrician can find the wet fitting, dry it and replace it with a properly sealed, IP-rated one.

Can a Water Heater Trip the Breaker?

Yes. As water heater elements age, their insulation breaks down and they start leaking current to earth, which trips the RCD, usually when the heater is on. Replacing the element normally fixes it.

How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Tripping Breaker in Dubai?

Diagnosis usually starts from about AED 150, which covers testing to find the cause. The repair cost depends on what is found, such as replacing an RCD, a breaker, a water heater element or a damaged socket. You agree the price before the repair is done.

Keep It from Happening Again

Label your breakers, have the DB panel checked every year or two, and replace water heater elements before they fail. If you need help today, our emergency electrician service prioritises urgent faults every day from 8am to 10pm.
