How High Should You Mount a TV? A Height Guide for Dubai Homes

Most TVs in Dubai homes are mounted too high. Here is how to find the right height for your sofa, screen size and wall type.

Flat screen TV mounted on a living room wall above a wooden media unit

The most common mistake we see in Dubai living rooms is a TV hung far too high, often above a tall media unit or a fireplace-style feature wall. It looks fine when you stand in the room, but after a week of watching from the sofa your neck tells a different story. Getting the TV mounting height right is simple once you know the rule.

The Basic Rule: Eye Level from Your Seat

When you sit back on your sofa, your eyes should line up with the centre of the screen, or a little below the top third. For most sofas in Dubai apartments, seated eye height is about 100 to 110 cm from the floor. That puts the centre of a typical living room TV at roughly 105 to 115 cm.

A quick way to check before drilling:

  • Sit in your usual spot and ask someone to hold a tape measure against the wall.
  • Note the height that lines up with your eyes.
  • Mark that point as the centre of the screen, not the bottom edge.

Mounting Height by Room

Living Room

Aim for the screen centre at seated eye level. If you have a low sofa or recliners, go lower. If the TV sits above a sideboard, leave at least 10 to 15 cm between the unit and the bottom of the screen so it does not look cramped.

Bedroom

People usually watch from bed with their head raised on pillows, so the screen can sit higher than in a living room. A slight downward tilt bracket makes a big difference here.

Majlis and Large Family Rooms

In big rooms with seating on several sides, a full-motion arm lets you angle the screen towards whoever is watching. Keep the resting height at eye level for the main seating.

Screen Size and Viewing Distance

A screen that is too big for the room is as uncomfortable as one mounted too high. As a guide for 4K TVs:

  • 55 inch: about 1.7 to 2.3 metres from the sofa
  • 65 inch: about 2 to 2.7 metres
  • 75 inch: about 2.3 to 3.2 metres
  • 85 inch and above: 2.6 metres or more

Measure from the front of the sofa cushion to the wall before you buy.

Check the Wall Before You Choose the Height

The best height is no use if the wall cannot hold the bracket. Most partitions in Dubai Marina, JLT and Business Bay apartments are gypsum board, while villa walls are usually concrete block. Gypsum needs fixings into the metal studs or a backing board, and block walls need the right plugs. Our guide to choosing the right wall anchor explains the difference.

Also check for cables and pipes. They often run straight up and down from sockets and switches, which is exactly where people want to drill.

Hiding the Cables

A neat TV wall needs a plan for power and HDMI cables. Options include in-wall cable kits on gypsum walls, slim paintable trunking on block walls, or a TV panel that hides everything. See our hidden cable management service for the choices.

Common Mounting Mistakes

  • Mounting above a fireplace or tall unit so you look up all evening.
  • Using plastic plugs in gypsum board.
  • Choosing a fixed bracket when the screen faces a sunny window.
  • Forgetting the soundbar, which needs space below the screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Standard TV Mounting Height?

There is no single standard, because it depends on your seating. As a guide, the centre of the screen should be at seated eye level, which is usually 100 to 115 cm from the floor in a living room. Measure from your own sofa rather than copying a number, because low sofas and recliners change the right height.

Can I Mount a TV Above a Fireplace or Tall Media Unit?

You can, but it usually puts the screen too high for comfortable viewing. If you must, use a tilting or pull-down bracket so the screen angles towards the seating. Leave at least 10 to 15 cm between the top of the unit and the bottom of the TV so it does not look cramped.

Which Bracket Is Best: Fixed, Tilt or Full Motion?

Fixed brackets sit closest to the wall and suit rooms where you always watch from straight ahead. Tilting brackets help in bedrooms and reduce window glare. Full-motion arms let you swing the screen towards different seats, which is useful in open-plan rooms and majlis areas, but they need the strongest wall fixings.

How Long Does TV Mounting Take?

A standard mounting on a prepared wall usually takes one to two hours, including levelling and tidying cables. Concealing cables inside a gypsum wall, fitting a soundbar or mounting on marble can add time. Large screens over 75 inches are normally handled by two technicians.
