Most things that fall off walls in Dubai homes do not fail because the item is too heavy. They fail because the wrong fixing was used for the wall. Before you hang a TV, a mirror or a shelf, it helps to know what your wall is made of and which anchor suits it.
First, Find Out What Your Wall Is Made Of
Dubai buildings use three main wall types, and each one needs a different fixing.
- Gypsum board. Common for partitions in apartments in Dubai Marina, JLT, Business Bay and Downtown. Tap the wall: it sounds hollow, and a drill goes through quickly with white dust.
- Concrete block. Used for most villa walls and outer apartment walls. It sounds solid, and drilling produces grey dust and needs a hammer drill.
- Solid concrete. Found in columns, beams and some ceilings. It is very hard to drill and often hides steel reinforcement.
If you are not sure, drill a small pilot hole in a hidden spot and look at the dust, or ask your building management for the wall specification.
The Right Anchor for Each Wall
Gypsum Board Walls
Standard plastic plugs spin in gypsum and pull out under load. Use:
- Metal cavity anchors (sometimes called hollow wall anchors) for shelves, mirrors and curtain rods up to medium weight.
- Spring or snap toggles for heavier items, because they spread the load behind the board.
- Fixing into the metal stud for TVs and heavy cabinets. A stud finder helps locate it.
Never hang a large TV from gypsum alone. Either fix into studs or add a timber backing board.
Concrete Block Walls
Block walls are hollow inside, so long nylon plugs that expand across the block work best. For heavy loads, use plugs made for hollow blocks, or chemical anchors.
Solid Concrete
Use good quality nylon plugs sized to the screw, or metal expansion anchors for heavy loads. Check for hidden cables and pipes first, as they often run vertically above sockets and switches.
How Much Weight Can a Wall Hold?
The anchor, not the wall, usually sets the limit. Always check the rated load on the anchor packet and use at least four fixings for TV brackets. Remember that a TV on a full-motion arm puts far more force on the wall when it is pulled out than when it sits flat.
Tiled Walls in Kitchens and Bathrooms
Tiles crack easily if you drill with the hammer setting on. Use a tile drill bit, start slowly, put masking tape over the spot to stop the bit sliding, and drill into the grout line where possible. Seal holes in wet areas so water cannot get behind the tiles.
Renting? Protect Your Deposit
Many landlords in Dubai check walls closely at move-out. Use as few holes as possible, choose rental-friendly options such as tension rods where they genuinely work, and keep a note of where you drilled. Small holes can be filled, sanded and touched up before handover.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Hang a TV on a Gypsum Wall in Dubai?
Yes, but not with plastic plugs alone. A TV on gypsum board should be fixed into the metal studs behind the board, or onto a timber or plywood backing board fitted inside the wall. Heavy-duty metal toggles can work for smaller screens, but for anything over 55 inches or on a full-motion arm, studs or a backing board are the safe choice.
How Do I Know If My Wall Is Gypsum or Concrete?
Knock on it. Gypsum sounds hollow and a drill passes through quickly, leaving white powder. Concrete block sounds solid, needs a hammer drill and leaves grey dust. Many Dubai apartments have both: outer walls in block and inner partitions in gypsum, so check each wall separately.
What Is the Strongest Wall Anchor for Heavy Mirrors?
For block and concrete walls, long nylon plugs or metal expansion anchors with screws into a French cleat or heavy-duty brackets hold large mirrors well. On gypsum, use spring toggles or fix into studs. Always use at least two fixings and check the rated load on the packet is well above the mirror's weight.
Will Drilling Damage My Rental Apartment?
Small, neat holes are normally treated as fair wear in Dubai rentals, and they can be filled and touched up before you move out. Avoid drilling near sockets and switches, where cables usually run, and keep a note of where you drilled so filling them at move-out is quick.
When to Call a Handyman
Call a professional for TVs over 55 inches, heavy mirrors, anything above a bed or sofa, and any drilling near sockets, switches or water pipes. Our team identifies the wall, uses anchors rated for the load and checks for hidden services before drilling. See our TV wall mounting, mirror installation and shelving installation services for details.
